Marine Bryozoa
Scientific Name: Membranipora membanacea
Common Name: Lacy-Crust Bryozoan
Marine Bryoza is also known as "Lacy crust bryoxoan" because the skeletons of dead colonies of Bryozoa form a beautiful lace-like pattern on the outer covering. The composition of the outer cell is calcareous, similar to that of corals.
This sample was collected from a shampoo bottle (# 16618-26) that was washed ashore at the beach of Ocean Shores, WA on June 18, 2016. |

There is no valid methodology to identify where each debris was originally dumped before traveling along the North Pacific Gyre. It is one of our research objects to find (speculate) the original disposal location by analyzing the regional characteristics of phytoplankton or zooplanktons attached to the debris.
We are also tracking marine debris to estimate the gross volume of Asian originated marine debris reaching to the coasts of the Pacific Northwest. However, estimating the actual volume is still in the preliminary stages. |

| On this day, we saw a large (head to tail about 90 cm) bald eagle (Scientific name: Haliaeetus leucocephalus) perchied on top of a lodgepole pine tree standing on a cliff, and occasionally chasing birds flying nearby. |
