There is no valid methodology to identify where each debris was originally dumped before traveling along the North Pacific Gyre. It is one of our research objects to find (speculate) the original disposal location by analyzing the regional characteristics of phytoplankton or zooplanktons attached to the debris.
We are also tracking marine debris to estimate the gross volume of Asian originated marine debris reaching to the coasts of the Pacific Northwest. However, estimating the actual volume is still in the preliminary stages. |

This image looks like an aerial satellite photo of a mysterious planet. However, these are the patterns left on a blue plastic bottle after removing a cluster of Goose barnacles (lepas anatifera).
Goose barnacles are "sessile organisms", which live in the ocean and attach to rocks and any artificial structures such as piers, seawall, and even on drifting ships.
Each of the Goose barnacles ooze out adhesive enzymes to connect their bodies and grow. With the increasing amount of marine debris in the ocean, many of them are attaching on to those drifting debris as well. Just like many other chemical reactions, the patterns left by the enzyme activity of Goose barnacle are mysterious and unimaginably beautiful. |
