| March 2013 Research Overview |
| Marine Debris Survey at the Pacific Northwest |

On March 28, 2013, we did another arrival situation research of Asian marine debris at the coast of Ocean Shores in Washington State. An interesting observation to make in this survey is that we found debris not following our usual find of beverage bottles and bottle caps. We found a skin lotion bottle and kitchen detergent, which can be seen as household items. We also collected more Japanese debris compared to previous research surveys done. This may or may not suggest a possible correlation with the Japanese Tsunami of 2011.
We found a fabricated wood joint piece (Size: 12cm x12cm x 90cm) that may be part of an attic construction. |
Two characteristics we used to determine this wood piece as a typical part of Japanese wooden houses are:
1. The wood material was made with a 12cm square prism, which is a standard specification of post materials in wood houses.
2. The joint fabrication used was of a typical Japanese carpentry technique.
We also checked the amount of radiation dose and exposure of this wood piece.
