| April 2012 Research Overview |
| Marine Debris Survey at the Pacific Northwest |
On April 28 through 29, 2012, we did another Asian related marine debris arrival situation research at three beaches along the coast of Washington State.
The beaches were: Ocean shores, Pacific Beach, and Moclips. |
Through this survey, we found the followings.
1. Plastic bottles & caps: 16
2. Buoys and floats: 2
3. Unidentifiable large Styrofoam pieces: 2
We were not able to find any particular marine debris related to the Japan tsunami of 2011. Tsunami related debris are approaching the Pacific Northwest at a much faster rate than we originally anticipated with calculations based on speed and direction of actual ocean currents. These debris have already reached the Canadian and Alaskan coast, possibly due to the strong westerly jet of this winter. As tsunami debris will most likely reach the shores of Washington very soon, we will continue to track arriving debris closely.
